Our first taste of New England was Cambridge, Massachusetts where we spent four days mixing with America’s academic elite – and their parents. It was the time of year when students return to University, and it seems that in many cases Mom and Pop accompany them.
Our guest house was located smack bang between Harvard and MIT, and was very popular with students and their families. One day, we had breakfast with a family from Houston whose daughter was studying economics. The next day, we ate with a man from Tennessee, who was visiting his daughter – a freshman at Harvard. While out on the town, we saw lots of older people too – they didn’t look like mature students.
